Not Getting The Website Traffic That You Expected?

Not Getting The Website Traffic That You Expected?

Better Evaluate Your Website To Get More Repeat & Unique Users!!!

There is nothing worse than a poorly designed website. It has no navigational flow, interesting content or aesthetic appeal. A poorly designed website is just plain difficult to use and will not generate the traffic you need to succeed. Unfortunately, we often overlook such issues; we forget that it does not matter what we think our website. It is the website users option that will make or break you. If you are not getting the unique visitors and repeat website traffic that you desire, you might want to start asking your users their opinion of your website. The following information will also help you!

Is your website attractive and easy to use?

The aesthetics might be off target. There may be usability issues. There may be offensive content. Whether your website focus is towards children or adults, make it attractive and easy to use for all ages in your target market. This does not mean to add huge, flashing, "Click Here" images on common interest websites. It does not mean that professional websites should be bland. You need to have a balance of colors, fonts, images, content and structure. On the other hand, you better darn well design your website so that all people find it easy to use. You should also keep in mind that a senior citizen friendly, mobile capable and handicapp accessible website is important, too. In fact, it is just plain considerate. That should be the type of web resource that you are always striving to be.

Does Your Website Have Unique Content?

This is the information age and the Internet is the #1 source of getting it quickly. Your website needs to provide as much unique information as possible. It is best to write your own page content, blog subjects and articles. It is best to create your own images, though you could rename them if using others. Make it original. Make it informative. Make it easy to understand for all target ages and users. Try your hardest not to use free articles and "suggested text ads" because your users and the search engines do not like duplicate content. There are some ways and locations where you can get away with this, but that is a completely different blog topic. For now, just know that your users thrive off of new material. Your long term success and website traffic is dependant upon it.

How about your SEO?

Search engine optimization (SEO) is a key factor here. Is your code clean? Are you using your own creative content? Do your images have alt tags? Are you providing links back to your site from quality sites? There is a lot to it, but it is not difficult. If you are following the search engine guidelines and practicing white hat, but competitive SEO strategies, then you will obtain free search engine traffic and exposure to more website users --- without a doubt.

Is There Enough User Interaction?

Why do you think that using social networks and having blogs are so essentials in this Web 2.0 era? It is because humans like interaction and we like common interest communities. Forget about how many content rich and user friendly pages are on your website! Is there really concrete user interaction or are there just pages, images and links to click? Do you have any games, polls or widgets? These essentials are often overlooked. We forget that adults like to play on the Internet, too. Your website users desire interraction, the ability to communicate and even use informational websites to unwind (like reading a good book). You have to make your site interesting. This wake them up to new and cool "things" that they typically would not have the exposure to when learning and entertaining themselves offline. Twitter links, guestbooks, games, forums, comment areas, audio, video and image sharing ... users like these features. You can also obtain their valuable input with surveys, polls, geo widgets and contact forms. Provide a fun and information resource for your website users. Use titles that ask questions. Provide what your competitors are missing. Adding interactive widgets are not only fun, but appropriate for business websites. Just make sure that they are tasteful and strategically placed on a page. If you do not agree, start paying attention to banner advertisements on major search engines and directories. You will see that they are more animated and interactive, too. For example, 1) the skincare ads that smooth wrinkles away or 2) the video adds that get larger when you place your computer mouse over them. These ads are very catchy and effective.

Are you providing proper support to your website users?

There are always new users, unexpected glitches and consumer needs. Does your website provide proper support for these needs? Are these support resources easy to find and use? Whether you provide a page with your direct company information, ticket support system, live chat or contact form, there is nothing worse than using a website that provides no way to communicate with the webmaster. You will also want to make sure that your domain is registered with contact information, too. You can ruin your credibility and frustrate users when proper support information is not available to your website visitors.

Are you taking more than your giving?

Free, Free, Free ... Everyone loves a good deal; especially if it's free. Website users value free e-books, software they can download, videos, audios, widgets, graphics, resources and tools. Whether you offer a free advertising location, monthly contests with prizes, or your are providing free training audios and videos, there has to be more of your giving in order for users to take the time to use your website. You also need to provide variety in order for users to consider your website of continuous value.

Do you have a Newsletter / E-Zine?

Not only are e-zines and newletters fun, they are necessary tools used to reach users when they are not on your website. It is also how you continue to communicaye with your target markets. This builds trust, educates and develops repeat website traffic. E-zines and newsletters should be to the point, rich in content, easy to read and not to cluttered with spam. Just nice clean resources with information, resources and tools that feed common interests. They are also an excellent supplement for your advertisers, too.

Can all of the users advertise on your website?

Free Advertising and / or paid advertising is helpful to both your consumer and e-commerce markets. Whether by form of link exchanges, classifieds, business directory, groups, forum, guestbook or paid advertising locations ... try to provide some type of advertising location. General site visitors like to find resources quickly, have exposure to new services and products, as well as advertise their items for sale and talents. Other website owners are always looking for more exposure and sales. Both will support your growth efforts by providing unique content, referrals, link popularity, website traffic and payment for advertising locations.

Are your users helping you generate website traffic?

As previously stated, it is in good practice to establish link exchanges for your website. You just need to be careful using this method. On the other hand, it is far much better to have more websites linking to you.also be to your advantage to implement an affiliate and / or referral program, too. This can be as simple as providing an invite system for your users to email friends and family with your website link. It is also an excellent idea to provide links and banners that your website users can add to their blogs, websites, email or as a resource in forums. An affiliate program would be better yet. An affiliate program is a formal tracking system that allows both the user and you to see how much traffic the participant is referring to your website, where the visitors are coming from, Not only is an affiliate program wonderful for exposure, it is also a tool for screening who could become a potential moderator, freelance partner or employee. Those with tight budgets usually begin by offering prizes, advertising credits or profit sharing as motivation for website users to participate in their affiliate program. The most common affiliate programs provide money (commissions or set values) for their affiliates continued support.

The design of your website is extremely important to your overall success. If it is difficult to use, has sloppy code that is missing SEO and quality content, and is cluttered with graphics that are useless to the visitor, then you are not going to get the unique users and repeat website traffic that you desire.

Thanks, Lea ~

This tends to be common sense 'rules to blog by' , reminders that are often necessary to keep us more aware of the needs of the visitor!

Thanks.

Thanks, Mark. I appreciate that ... had to get off my hump for a second :)

Yes, duplicate content is really not to our advantage, but sometimes necessary. That is why classifieds sites, article sites and social networks are so great ... You can duplicate some, though it is best to go back and make each long term and valuable resource unique. Hopefully, by that time, you know which are driving traffic and which keywords to target according to how your consumers find your information. You can also begin to target the more competitive terms at that time by linking off of others at that site.

I would like to say that it wouldn't matter on an "authority site", but the truth of the matter is that a site can start loosing page ranking, a few at a time, even though the majority of the pages are getting good search engine positioning - I am not talking about the times when the ranking disappears because of indexing - if all is well with that site except for duplication or somewhat similar content, the whole site can "go down" very quickly. It seems like they disappear from the results, but they are still indexed and available. In those cases they were "sand boxed" - in a sub index - until you can correct the issues, drive your own quality traffic and get out.

Your personal websites should not have duplicate. For as long as it remains successful with the duplicate content, you are at risk for having that long of a time pulling it back up to getting the exposure you need. It REALLY - REALLY - REALLY stinks to be in that position when it is a site that is "feeding" others and / or your efforts, you know?

Great article Lea. I was not aware that the search engines do not like duplicate content. We then need to edit any content given away by the program admins.
